BATH. STREET ART. AND SOME THEATRE!!!

This week we went to Bath.  The students took a self-guided tour of the Roman Baths and then had the rest of the day to tour the city of Bath.  Some went to the Costume museum, The Jane Austen museum. We also tried out the various restaurants! Jimmy and I went to Loch Fyne, a fish restaurant where we had oysters, potted mackerel, salmon, and bream...excellent meal.

The Baths....

Students listening to the self guided tour.  The alternate explanation was by Bill Bryson.  Very funny commentary.

Typical photo taken by tourists because they were told not to touch the water. It's Dirty!

Jimmy and his Roman friend!

This is one of two bridges in the world that have buildings on them.  Mostly stores.  The other one is in Florence, Italy.

At the end of the tour of the baths you can drink the water from the bubbler, as we say in Rhode Island.

The pigeon man....he actually works for the alien birds....

The bird lady of Bath.  At first I thought they were attacking her, but I think she is part of the plot to take over the world.....

and so is Carlos.....

Great name for a street!!!!!

Also this week we went to see a number of plays.  At the National we saw the premiere of The Light Princess, a new musical written by Tori Amos.  Visually it was stunning but I believe it could use some cutting.  A bit too long.  Should be a good discussion on it in class on Monday.  Today we are going to see Liola in the same theatre at the National.  This is an adaptation of a Luigi Pirandello play.  The National Theatre is one of my favorite theatres in London.  There are three theatres in the building.  The Olivier, The Littleton, and the Cottesloe which is being re-done and will be re-named.  It has a great art gallery where there is an exhibit of photographs of plays from the 1960's.  It was wonderful to see Laurence Olivier, Ian McKellan, Maggie Smith, Anthony Hopkins, Derek Jacobi, and others in their younger years.  There is also a number of restaurants in the building and a wonderful bookstore.  Before shows everynight there are different musical groups that will perform.  It is a very festive place.  One can also do a backstage tour!

The National Theatre on the right.

The lobby bar at the National.

I had dinner at the theatre.  Sea Bass with roasted fennel and eggplant and tomatoes....nice!

Shelby, Rachel, Carlos and I went to see the Wednesday matinee of The Book of Mormon.  Fantastic!  It was my third time seeing it in London and my fourth time over-all....We met Gavin Creel who plays Elder Price after the show.  He is going to come to class to speak to the students soon.  We are very excited to have a Q and A session with him.

They are smiling because they just met Gavin Creel and were still laughing at the show!

Below the Embankment Bridge is the cemetery for used and broken skateboards and old shoes...

The next blog will show some of the artwork students viewed in many of the galleries that they went to with the Art in London class.  This past week they went on a guided tour of street art in London.  All of them loved it!   Here is some of what they saw!  Enjoy!

Tim, this isn't how Atlas did it!!!!

Leave it to Billy to obey the sign.

Some students went to see The Mousetrap, the longest running play in London. 60 years!  Other groups went to The Comedy Store to see the improv group who began Who's Line is it Anyway! It is always a great time there.

This is an illegal picture of part of the stage of The Light Princess

More birds.  Arielle who is petrified of birds received a gift of Xmas birds.  However, the candy apple made it all better.

Meanwhile, the evil birds are now taking the Tube to get to where they want to go.

Someone obviously cannot wait for Holloween!!!

                                                     THAT'S ALL FOLKS!
